A VPN is a genuinely useful privacy tool when applied to the right threats — particularly unsecured networks and ISP-level tracking. However, it is frequently marketed as a comprehensive security solution, which it is not. Understanding precisely what a VPN does and doesn't do helps you deploy it strategically rather than rely on it blindly.

What a VPN Actually Does
A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server operated by the VPN provider. All internet traffic you send travels through that tunnel before reaching its destination, which has two primary effects: your data is encrypted in transit, and the websites or services you visit see the VPN server's IP address rather than your own.

This matters most in two real-world scenarios. First, on an unsecured network — such as a coffee shop or airport Wi-Fi — a VPN prevents other people on that network from intercepting your unencrypted traffic.
